I'm working on my secondary education credential with an endorsement in mathematics. I'm passionate about using my computer science background within my future mathematics classroom. I believe the future of this country depends on creating technologically literate students who do not solely use technology, but have the ability to create technology. I'm the mother to 2 young girls who started learning the basics of coding at 3 years old (Robot Turtles, anyone?). Follow me on Twitter @MBackmeg

Simply Complex

"The art of simplicity is a puzzle of complexity."

Lily: Is this Uncle Jackson?
Hope: (while laughing hysterically) No, this is Bon Jovi.

Any guesses who Lily wanted to listen to?

"Mommy, Brooke drew on my brain!"

L: I don't want daddy to go to work. I want you and daddy to stay home and play Legos all day.
M: Then who will go to work and make money?
L: Brooke!

Lily: "When does Cinderella lose her shoe?!"
Me: "At the end of the movie."
Lily: "How much longer?"
Me: "About an hour."
Lily: "When we go to the library, I want to get a shorter movie"
Me: "Why?"
Lily: "Because this one is too long!"

Lily knocks toys all over the floor then says...
L: That's okay, Brooke will clean them.
Me: Why does Brooke have to clean them? You knocked it over.
L: I'm pretending she's my mommy.
Me: So mommies do all the cleaning?
L: Yes.
Me: Doesn't Daddy clean too?
L: Well... he cleans his plate!

Where does Daddy work?
L: Buena Vista Vista-versery
Where did Daddy work in Rhode Island?
L: Black University

L: Why is that person sitting on a rollerskate?
That's not a rollerskate, that's a wheelchair.

While singing the hokey pokey:
L: Put your right elmo in, put your right elmo out, put your right elmo in and shake it all about.

L: "What is Taylor doing?"
D: "He's begging in the kitchen."
L: "What is he baking?"

A 2 year old's train of thought... L: There was a fly in Mommy and Daddy's bedroom last night. It flew around the room and Lily hid in the closet.
M: That's right, and Daddy caught the fly and put it outside.
L: Flies live outside?
M: Yes
L: Flies come inside our home? M: Sometimes, but we prefer they stay outside.
L: Flies have their own home?
M: Yes, they do.
L: Flies take a bath in water?
M: I'm sure they do. They drink water too.
L: Flies live in the ant's home?
M: I think flies are too big to fit inside the ant's home.
L: Okay
... and apparently that's all she wanted to know about flies this time around.

L: Daddy, can I sit next to you on the chair?
D: I don't think we'll both fit.
L: Is your bottom too big?

L: "I have a tongue twister for you... Betty Boughta bought some butter. Ew she said, this butter's bitter. If I use this bitter butter, it will make my batter bitter. I need a bit of better butter just to make my batter better. Betty bought a bit of better butter, now Betty's batter isn't bitter!" (Seriously?! She memorized the ENTIRE thing?!)

When Brooke was born, we explained to Lily (after she tried to give her ice cream) that babies can only drink Mommy's milk. So now Lily will point at my chest and say "that's mommy's milk". Last week in the dressing room at Kohl's, I'm trying on bathing suits and Lily says (rather loudly!) "That one makes mommy's milk look nice!"
